SS Chief Charlot: This 441 foot long WW II Liberty Ship was named in his honor. The vessel was launched on October 12, 1943 by the Permanente Metals Corp. in Richmond, CA. The proud new ship transported vital supplies to US and Allied Forces during WW II. The vessel served or was in reserve from 1946 until her hull was recycled for scrap metal in 1958.

The ship cover also honors Native-American Salish Chief Charlot. He was born in 1830 in the Bitterroot Valley of Montana and his fore-fathers founded a settlement near Missoula. He fought against the American soldiers and settlers. His leadership is still of great pride in his nation, and he was a hero to his people. He resisted until he died in 1910. (see the web pages for the details of his life).
