Yasser Fonseca's graphic work is created using the Woodcut
technique, whose historical origins in the West date back to the 13th century.
This is a relief printing technique carried out on a wooden matrix. The main
difference with linoleum is that the wood grain is visible when stamped,
enhancing the beauty of the image. There are different types of woods, with the
most suitable being the hard ones. Two variations of this technique are in
reference to the direction of the wood fibers, namely woodcut with the grain
and woodcut against the grain (respectively). In the first, the wood is cut
along the length of the tree trunk, while in the second, it is cut across the
grain. This will have implications not only on the final appearance of the
print but also in the process of working on the matrix.
The tools used remain burins, U and V gouges, and chisels,
to which, with greater safety than in linoleum, other cutting and texturing
instruments can be added, such as serrated knives, metal brushes, forks,
micro-drills, pyrography tools, and more. Mordants that enhance the grain, such
as caustic soda, can also be used.
