The Love Letters of a Chinese Lady
This book of letters, translated here so beautifully and sympathetically, were written by Kwei-li, the wife of a Chinese official, to her husband when he accompanies his master, Prince Chung on a trip round the world. The writer stands at the parting of the ways between the old civilization of China and the modern era which has now superceded it, and indirectly reveals much of the beauty of the old patriarchal Chinese life, of which so little was known at the time.
