Here we have a top quality late Victorian Sterling Silver Sifter Spoon in the distinctive Fiddle, Thread & Shell pattern. The spoon has the initials S W H elegantly engraved at the top of the stem.

The sifter spoon was made in London by the renowned Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company and dates to 1893. Founded in 1880 by William Gibson and John Langman, The Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company occupied a famous showroom at 112 Regent Street where they served a high end clientele with goods of the very finest quality. They manufactured at Clerkenwell in London and the Regent Works in Sheffield. In 1952 they amalgamated with their Regent Street neighbours Garrard & Co.

Condition is very good, with no dings, dents or damage and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after 130 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs as these form part of the description.

As you would expect from The Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co, this is a well made item in a good heavy gauge of silver. The sifter spoon is 15.3cm / 6ins long, 4.8cm / 1.9ins across the bowl and weighs in at a very respectable 61.9g / 2.2oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are a little distorted by the thread lines along the sides of the stem but are still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter S for 1893 and the W G over J L makers' mark for William Gibson and John Langman of The Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co.
