THE DANAIDES (J.W. Waterhouse,1906)

The artist painted two pictures of The Danaides, daughters of Danaus, King of Argos. In a grim tale the fifty daughters were commanded to fulfil a prophecy and kill their husbands on their wedding night. All obeyed except Hypermnestra, although in some accounts Amymone and Athena also failed to. The Danaides buried their victims and were purified from their crime by Zeus, but in later versions of the story the Danaides received the punishment of everlastingly drawing water from a well and pouring it into a leaking vessel. This is represented by the artist's splendid 1906 work.
