The Open Face German Sallet Helmet was preferred by crossbowmen, archers, spearmen and even cannoneers when rapidly developing firearms appeared on the battlefield. Infantry troops willingly sacrificed the extra protection of closed helmets for a better view and more air. (They needed more air than their mounted brothers in arms since foot combat was a whole body affair.)
Our open face sallet is an excellent reproduction 15th century helmet and can be used for re-enactment or display. If you are not planning to use padding in the helm, an optional leather suspension liner is available. The helmet comes with rolled and roped edges.
