Yosegi Tamate Box J0019 Karakuri Box

Karakuri Box is one of the evolved forms of secret boxes.

Please enjoy the future of marquetry.

*Secret Box, a representative work of Hakone marquetry, is said to have its roots in the late Edo period

(around 1830). In the Meiji era (1868-1912), it came to be called "Chie-bako," and it was around 1894

(27th year of Meiji) that the secret box as we know it today was invented by Ryugoro Okawa, a craftsman in

 Hakone-Yumoto.

The secret box can be opened by sliding the sides of the box in the correct order.

The more times you slide the box, the more difficult it becomes. Some boxes require only 4 slides to open,

while others require 72 slides. We have 125 secret boxes on display in our store.
