1732 Rapin de Thoyras History of
England Norman Conquest Elizabeth HUGE MAPS 2v
Paul de Rapin, more commonly known as
Thoyras, was a 17th-century French Huguenot historian who is
primarily remembered for his ‘History of England’. First published in 1724,
‘Histoire d’Angleterre’ begins with the ancient Britons and the Norman
Conquest, William the Conqueror, through the reigns of Elizabeth I, Charles I,
King James II, and finally William and Mary.
While the early French editions of Thoyras’s
“England” are quite popular, none are as desirable as this 1732 Tindal English
edition. This enormous, two-volume edition is complete with full-page
engravings and folding maps including the highly coveted double-page map of
Great Britain and Ireland! Other illustrations include portraits of English
kings and queens, monuments and graves, and an impressive folding map of
France!
It should be noted that Tindal’s English
translation was, according to the ODNB,
“an important
contributor to the remarkable success of Rapin's History. His footnotes added
extra topical detail and recounted well-known legends about English history.”
