Ukrainian Commemorative 5 hryven (UAH) coin
"Battle of Khotyn"
Mintage: 35 000
UC# 482
2021
Dedicated to an important event in the European history of the first half of the 17th century, which actually decided the fate of Christian civilization, the 400th anniversary of the Khotyn epic, during which the Ottoman Empire was stopped on the Moldavian border by the joint efforts of the Zaporizhzhya-Polish-Lithuanian troops. In September 1621, the many thousand army of Sultan Osman II met on the battlefield, which was opposed by a much smaller army. The Ottomans stormed the Cossack positions seventeen times and about ten times the positions of the Polish-Lithuanian forces. The role of the Zaporizhzhya army, led by the brilliant politician and commander Pyotr Konashevich-Sagaidachny, who imposed the tactics of night warfare on the enemy, was particularly significant. Considering the huge losses (Osman II's army did not count about 40,000 soldiers), the Ottoman Empire was forced to abandon its plans to conquer Europe and sign the Khotyn Peace Treaty.
On the obverse side of the coin is placed: at the top on a mirror background - a small State Coat of Arms of Ukraine, to the right of which is the inscription UKRAINE; in the center - a composition symbolizing the siege of the Khotyn camp: the fortress (on the left), the defenders' troops (on the right of the fortress), surrounded by clouds of smoke; above the river, to the right of the fortress, is a stylized camp of opponents; inscriptions: denomination – 5/HRYVEN (on the background of the fortress), year of coin minting 2021 (at the bottom on a matte background); logo of the Banknote and Mint of the National Bank of Ukraine (under the mintage year).
On the reverse of the coin, in the foreground is the image of Hetman Pyotr Sahaidachny, and on the back are figures of soldiers; on the left, on a mirror background, there are inscriptions: KHOTYNSKA/ BATTLE/ 1621/ YEAR.
