About Lonesome Burl Studio’s Spirits of the Forest series:

“Trees are sanctuaries. Whoever knows how to speak to them, whoever knows how to listen to them, can learn the truth. They do not preach learning and precepts, they preach undeterred by particulars, the ancient law of life. “
- Hermann Hesse

Humans have long wondered what spirits roam the forest. Children’s literature, adult books, movies, plays, and television fantasize about secretive creatures that live in the trees. Those who spend any time in the forest wonder what invisible forces are there as they sense a presence other than their own. Many enjoy time in the trees, absorbing a redemptive quality. This ongoing series of wooden abstract wall art aims to capture some of the beauty of the forest that gives glimpses of the spirits. Some pieces reveal faces and creatures that stir the soul. Other pieces combine color and wood grain in such a way that different viewers see different images. This series is dedicated to all who walk the forest pathways, like this artist, and think and wonder about many things.

About this piece:

Dimensions: 8-1/4” tall, 5-5/8” wide, 3/4” thick. Picture angles may make the piece look like it is not square, but it is.

Wood: Australian Red Mallee Burl framed in Ebonized Black Walnut

Description: No. 243 features dramatic figure and great color variation. The color ranges from off white to brown to black to reddish brown. Figure lines run through the eye burl making for an eye appealing design. Abstract faces and heads are thought provoking. Framed in ebonized black walnut to give that ebony look.

Process: This piece is bookmatched. The thickness of the wood is sliced in half. When the two sawn pieces are opened, the figure appears very similar and creates wonderful abstract designs due to the double image. The wood is glued in a press on to a piece of plywood. A frame is glued to the sides in a color that compliments the featured wood. The wood is sanded to 1600 grit and finished with multiple coats of non-yellowing tung oil and polyurethane.  The piece is signed and dated on the back by the artist, Barry A. Belknap. Hanging hardware, consisting of two d-rings and plastic coated wire, is installed on the back so the work is ready to hang.

Please note: Burl is rarely perfect. Voids and other irregularities are not considered defects, but often add to the beauty of burl. We make every attempt to utilize burl based on its artistic quality.
