John Hawkesworth was an important English book editor, most known for
his commission to edit Captain James Cook’s ‘Voyages’. First published in 1773, Hawkesworth edition of ‘Account of the Voyages’ included the
stories of various important excursions of John Byron, Captain Wallis,
Carteret, and of course James Cook. Sadly, many critics disapproved of his work
claiming it to be inaccurate; even though that may or may not have been the
case. He describes the customs and manners of the people living in the South
Seas, as well as specific highlights from the voyages.
