JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT (1960-1988) New York artist Jean-Michael Basquiat was a young graffiti artist when he first began his career in the New York Subway. From the streets of New York to the walls of its most prominent galleries, Basquiat catapulted to international fame in his early 20s with his raw graphic artwork that incorporated a fusion of words, cartoons and cultural references. He was a friend of Andy Warhol, and the subject of a feature film by fellow artist Julian Schnabel. Although he died at the early age of 27, Basquiat is one of the most admired artists to emerge from the 1980s art boom. His place in the history of American art cannot be denied during the eight years that he painted, which introduced the unique African-American and Latino experience to the elite art world.
