Owner is very motivated!! His wife needs some hearing aids. Truth.

Here we have an amazing 1973 Gibson Les Paul Deluxe Goldtop. This 50 year old Kalamazoo, Michigan made at the old Gibson Factory guitar has been very well taken care of and not played a whole heck of a lot. Besides having almost no laquer checking, the frets show no real wear and no signs of any pitting as well. Cosmetically the guitar has a newer look and customers are looking at it saying 'man this thing is almost mint!' The finish has it's share of very small blemishes and light dings but the worst dents are on the back of the body around the edge as you can see in the many pictures. The back of the body has hard to notice very light surface scratching. On the other hand the back of the entire neck is flawless and is like new! The guitar is 100% original and has had no repairs anywhere.

The CTS pots read 1377331 or the 31st. week of 1973. No solder joints have been touched. The serial number on the back of the headstock reads 126960. The Gibson mini humbucking pickups are black decaled Pat numbered and they sound fantastic.

The guitar had been sitting under the bed for the past 20 years, so I had to give it some love and a set up which included cleaning, seasoning the rosewood fretboard, and installing some fresh Ernie Ball .10-.46 strings. She tuned right up and stayed that way as those Gibson Kluson Deluxe machine heads are working very well. I did notice the G tuner was slightly bent. The guitar plays so very easy like butter, and the adjustable tuneomatic bridge is in great condition.

When you strum the guitar 'not' plugged into and amplifier it chimes out nice and loud. This is what we refer to as a 'ringer',,, and that is the sign of a really good guitar. I also think that this is the cleanest 1973 Goldtop out there.

So after all that, you might ask yourself, 'why was the pickguard signed by James Young of the rock band 'Styx', and why was the case sprayed in white, STYX Chicago, Ill 60612 ??

So it turns out, this gal who followed Styx all around the country for about 20 plus years, up to back when the 'James Young Group' dissolved.  So after the James Young Group breaks up, through a Guitar Center, Chicago, ILL. broker assistant of James Young, this gal buys the guitar from keyboardist?guitarist/vocalist, Lou DePasqua, and gets James Young to sign it with his usual blue Sharpie. The story and a picture of James Young holding the guitar is featured in a local Chicago News Magazine. When James Young found out 'she' bought the guitar he chuckled. This woman is currently looking for a copy with a picture of that article in storage.

Quote: James Young:  Styx still exists, but for 1993, "I have for the first time since Styx began making records, put a band together with the intention of performing my own music in front of audiences," says James Young. The "JAMES YOUNG Group," as it is called, consists of some seasoned veterans as well as some newcomers.

Drummer Ken Harck, the "Sasquatch of the Skins," was a member of fabled Chicago band Off Broadway, among others. Guitarist / vocalist Michael Baran was a member of the Glen Burtnick Band, as well as BMG recording artists The Galleyboyz. Bassist / vocalist Hank Horton, known as "The Beast from the East," arrived in Chicago a few years ago, and has been the workingest man on the Chicago music scene. Newcomer keyboardist / guitarist / vocalist Lou DePasqua rounds out the lineup.

This is where keyboardist/guitarist/vocalist Lou DePasqua, the member who sold her the guitar,

comes into the picture. To be continued, hopefully with or without a copy of that picture/article.
