1770 INCREDIBLE Ovid Metamorphoses
Greek Mythology Illustrated 150 Woodcut FOLIO
“I grabbed a pile of dust, and
holding it up, foolishly asked for as many birthdays as the grains of dust, I
forgot to ask that they be years of youth.”
― Ovid, Metamorphoses
Ovid’s ‘Metamorphoses’ is one
of the most famous works of Greek and Roman mythology and history of the 1st-century.
This epic poem recounts the history of the world from creation to the death of
Julius Caesar with accounts of famous mythological figures such as Jason,
Hercules, Orpheus and Eurydice, Achilles, Ulysses, and even the fall of Troy!
This impressive, and rather obscure German edition of Ovid was printed
in German in the second half of the 18th-century. Interestingly,
this large, oblong edition features 150 full-page engravings depicting scenes
from the story, each with German and Latin descriptions.
