The Civil War Battle of Big Bethel  took place June 10, 1861 near Newport news, Virginia. One of the earliest battles of the War was planned by Major Theodore Winthrop, 7th New York State Militia on the staff of  General Ebenezer Peirce. One of the first to respond to President Lincoln's call for volunteers. Winthrop led the assault on General DH Hill's 1st North Carolina Volunteers and was mortally wounded,  the first ranking Union officer killed in the War. An Original  Civil War CDV photo engraved lithograph view of Major Winthrop from his prewar photo and ink inscribed on the front mat  "Theodore Winthrop".
The reverse of the image bears the photographers imprint in small lettering at the CDV base "Rintoul & Rockwood, 839 Broadway, N.Y." Minor age stains on edge, overall VG. Comes w bio info for Major Winthrop. Major Winthrop  was a well-known writer  before the War, and  as the author of the popular 1861 news essay "Our March to Washington".
