Lovely Satsuma bowl of the Late Meiji period by Futaji working for the Maruni company in Kobe, Japan. Dating around 1910.

PLEASE NOTE: The mark can also be read as Kozan - another very important Satsuma Artist. I am researching this now to see if it is Kozan or it is Futaji who created this work

Maruni & Co were founded in the early 20th Century to produce and sell export ware especially Satsuma pieces. The company based in Kobe, Japan worked right up to the 1938 when the factory closed due to world war II. They then restarted when the war was finished but with the label CPO which meant they were supplying the US army with souvenir wares.
This bowl and the artist date to the very start of their production and where the quality was of the highest standards.

The lobed bowl shows Japanese stylised scenes including a view of Mount Fuji in the distance. The work is of very high quality and much of the decoration is highlighted in gold gilding. A lovely addition to any Satsuma Collection.
Dimensions: Diameter just under 16cm (6") and depth 7cm (just under 3")
The bowl is in excellent condition.
