The Hutt River Province, which later became known as the Principality of Hutt River, was a micronation in Australia. The history of this unique entity began on April 21, 1970, when Leonard Casley, a farmer, declared his farm an independent sovereign state named "Hutt River Province" in response to a dispute with the government of Western Australia over wheat production quotas. The Casley family was heavily affected by what they considered to be draconian wheat production quotas imposed by the government, which led to the secession. They had approximately 4,000 hectares of wheat ready to harvest when the quotas were introduced, which severely limited the amount they could sell.

Leonard Casley assumed the title of "Prince Leonard" and administered the Principality from 1970 to 2017. During its existence, the Principality of Hutt River engaged in international relations, although it remained unrecognized by any established state. It also developed a reliance on tourism and had its own unique relationship with the Australian taxation authorities.

The Principality was located over 500 kilometers north of Perth, Western Australia, and spanned about 75 square kilometers of mainly flat or undulating farmland. After 50 years of its unique status, the Principality of Hutt River was dissolved on August 3, 2020. The story of Hutt River Province stands as a notable chapter in the history of micronations, illustrating how individual disputes can lead to the creation of self-declared sovereign entities.
