On January 11, 2005, VMFA(AW)-224 BENGALS deployed to Al Asad Airbase, Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF). While in support of OIF, the Bengals employed 65,225 lbs. of ordnance and flew over 2500 sorties and 7000 hours in direct support of Marine, Army and Coalition ground units.

The "Bengals" flew F/A-18D Hornet fighter aircraft during Operation Iraqi Freedom in the early 2000s. The F/A-18D Hornet is a twin-engine, supersonic fighter aircraft that was designed and manufactured by McDonnell Douglas (now part of Boeing). It was first introduced into service with the United States Navy and Marine Corps in the 1980s and has since been used in a variety of military operations.

During Operation Iraqi Freedom, the "Bengals" were a Marine Corps squadron, officially designated as Marine All-Weather Fighter Attack Squadron 332 (VMFA(AW)-332). They operated out of Al Asad Airbase in Iraq and were responsible for conducting strike missions against enemy targets at night.

The F/A-18D Hornet is a versatile aircraft that is capable of performing a wide range of missions, including air-to-air combat, air-to-ground attack, reconnaissance, and electronic warfare.
