Vintage folk-art teapot, Soviet era, very large, brown glaze, intricately decorated. Like new condition. Brown glaze with green highlights. Stylized bird (probably a quail) with wings swept back forms the spout.  Another stylized bird is mounted on the top of the lid. This unique tea pot is artfully decorated with etched designs. The handle is formed from stylized leaves or possibly feathers. It is 15 inches tall (including the lid) by 14 inches wide (measured from the farthest point of the handle to the end of the spout). The mouth of the pot is 10 inches in diameter.
This piece, and several others were bought new in 1995 in a Soviet era GUM store in the far outskirts of Moscow that was still operating with old stock from all over the USSR and neighboring aligned countries. This functional folk-art item is unmarked,
but may be a product of one of the famous Ukrainian pottery factories such as the Vasilkovsky center in the Kiev region or of the now closed "Art Ceramics Plant" previously located in the Poltava region of The Ukraine in the city of Opishnya. Both facilities are famous for their many handmade original works turned out by artisans from the regions and both have used brown and green glaze combinations. Although the Opishnya Art Ceramics Plant closed many years ago, fortunately, many of the pieces produced in the Art Ceramics Plant are in regional museums and private collections.
