2 Antique Prints-ANATOMY-ORGANS-BRAIN-LUNGS-INTESTINES-Albinus-Eustachius-1761

Description: This original antique print originates from '?Explicatio tabularum anatomicarum Bartholomaei Eustachii, anatomici summi' by Bernardi Siegfried Albini. ?Published in Leiden, The Netherlands by Joannem & Hermannum Verbeek, 1761. This is in fact a re-edition of the work of Eustachius, first published in 1714 by Giovanni Maria Lancisi, and again in 1744 by Cajetan Petrioli, and then in 1744 by Bernhard Siegfried Albinus, and subsequently at Bonn in 1790. The engravings show that Eustachius had dissected with the greatest care and diligence, and taken the utmost pains to give just views of the shape, size, and relative position of the organs of the human body. The fact that his book became a bestseller more than a century after his death shows the extent of the religious restrictions on anatomists all through the Renaissance.

Artists and Engravers: Bartolomeo Eustachi (Italian: 1500 or 1514-1574), also known by his Latin name of Eustachius, was one of the founders of the science of human anatomy. His greatest work, which he was unable to publish, is his Anatomical Engravings. Completed in 1552 the author feared ex-communication by the Catholic Church. Bernhard Siegfried Albinus (originally Weiss) (1697 - 1770) was a German-born Dutch anatomist. Albinus is perhaps best known for his monumental Tabulae sceleti et musculorum corporis humani, which was first published in Leiden in 1747, largely at his own expense. The artist and engraver with whom Albinus did nearly all of his work was Jan Wandelaar. Jan Wandelaar (1690 - 1759), 18th-century painter and engraver from the Northern Netherlands.
