Perhaps the most amazing part of Alvis' history was his time served in World War II in the Asian theater. A 20-year-old Marine from Gary, Texas, already battle-hardened, joined the charge on Iwo Jima Beach 2 with the 2nd Battalion, 24th Marines. When it was over, 6,821 Americans and more than 20,000 Japanese defenders had paid the ultimate price for strategic control of the tiny island. In the 36 days of battle there were 25,851 U.S. casualties. The world remembers the Pulitzer Prize winning photograph by Joe Rosenthal which was the inspiration for what is today the Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington, Va. The same photo is also the subject of one of Grant's favorite paintings. In addition to the USHA, and Boys Ranch portraits, Grant has painted numerous generals and medal of honor winners which hang in various Marine Museums. Over 20 of his paintings are on display in the Museum of Marine Corps History, at MCRD, San Diego, where the annual Semper Fi tournament is held.
