PBY Catalina: This WW II patrol aircraft (flying boat) was first introduced in 1935 and was equipped to conduct anti-submarine, recon and rescue missions. The aircraft is a two engine propeller plane, with a crew of ten. Many downed flyers and stranded servicemen owed their lives to this aircraft and crews. See the web pages for the details of her construction, service, battles and continued use fighting fires. She could also use her five machine guns and drop bombs on the enemy. She became amphibious when retractable wheels were added. What a multipurpose platform!
