I'm making these apple tree seeds available as a convenient way to start apple trees for rootstock or to produce fruiting trees. The resulting apples produced may or may not resemble the mother tree.

The Grimes Golden apple Zone 5-8 is a rare variety which is self pollinating.
The original tree was discovered by Thomas Grimes in an orchard which Johnny Appleseed had planted in West Virginia in1804.
Grimes Golden will produce usable fruit without spraying.

Fruit: Medium to large yellow apples, crisp tender flesh with sweet aromatic spicy flavor. Good for fresh eating. West Virginia mountain folk used Grimes Golden to make hard cider because of it's high sugar content balanced with tartness. Ripens in late September early October, keeps until January. Fruit resists rotting even when damaged.

Tree habit: Bears young on a medium size tree, moderately vigorous growth habit, resistant to apple scab, fireblight, cedar apple rust, and mildew. Plant in well drained soil to prevent collar rot. Reliable annual bearer that tends to over crop. Should be thinned if larger apples are desired. Fruit tends to drop from tree when ripe. Flowers heavily mid bloom. A good pollinator for other apple varieties.
