He was the son of a German-born factory owner and had lived since he was 11. year back in Germany. From 1901 he studied at the School of Applied Arts in Nuremberg and from 1906 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich under Peter Halm. In 1946 he founded the Association for Original Etchings. Since 1909 he had several studios in Munich, including on Theresienstrasse, Schellingstrasse and Hohenzollernstrasse. From 1914 he took part as a volunteer on the 1st. World War part. He was deployed on both the Western Front and the Eastern Front. He married in 1919. In 1920 his son Peter was born. Eduard Winkler undertook several artist trips in Europe, for example to Italy, Poland and Russia. His son Peter also undertook several trips, primarily to Asia and the Orient. In 1942 Peter died in the war. Eduard Winkler has been employed as a war painter since 1942. After the end of the war, Eduard Winkler lived in difficult financial circumstances at times, but continued to work steadily. He died in Munich in 1978. // Eduard Winkler worked primarily as a painter and printmaker. His naturalistic landscapes, genre scenes and portraits were still in the style of the Munich School of the 19th century. Century committed. In 1940 and 1941 he took part in the Great German Art Exhibitions in Munich. The New Year's greetings from the 1930s and early 1940s and several of his bookplates nevertheless reveal his resolute anti-Nazism. An exchange of letters with Günther Weisenborn from 1946 and 1947 shows that in 1943, 1944 and 1945 Winkler posted self-written leaflets from a secret group "German Freedom Movement" in Munich mailboxes and sent them anonymously to the wives of high-ranking Nazi officials.
