Florida was a new American territory when Richard Campbell was born in 1824. Through out is long life he was caught up in the excitement of the growth and progress of this green land which was his home. The Campbell family had settled in West Florida while it was still a Spanish colony. The family participated actively in the political religious, and social life of the Pensacola community. They were ardent supporters of the southern cause during the Civil War.
