A bit of an intriguing mystery...
Seltmann Weiden Teapot Coffee Set (Teapot with Lid, Matching Creamer and Saucer) Südkurier Newspaper Theme 2017 Germany

Made in Bavaria Germany, this interesting four-piece teapot set offers a journalistic theme as the Südkurier (Southern Courier), a regional daily newspaper in Germany serving the regions northwest of Lake Constance, Hochrhein and Black Forest with its headquarters Konstanz, Germany is the subject matter. This piece appears to be either a OOAK (One of a Kind) Art display set or also may be classified as a crossover Historical/Political set of objects referring to Franco-Germanic relations. The staff here at Katerina Kollectibles has debated and come to the conclusion that our best guess these are vintage, blanks from the Seltmann Weiden factory in Bavaria, produced between 1949-1954. The image was imprinted on the object sometime in mid to late 2017, making this both a modern and historical item. Simply, someone chose to put this on a blank Seltmann teapot set for one (perhaps there was more?) with intent or they, or the transferware printer, just chose a random front page image. Either way, if you are a fan of modern regional German journalism or German-Franco political history, this is for you.

Pottery marks appear from research to be from approximately 1949-1954, however the newspaper print from the Südkurier is from the front page on or about May 14th, 2017. This piece adds more questions to the mystery--as to why someone would have this image of the article Machtwechsel in Frankreich, which translates roughly as "A Change of Power in France" and further center newspaper article on the piece as it remarks on the transition of power in France to Emmanuel Macron, the President of France in 2017. At the least, the piece brings us many more questions than answers. This has been difficult to price this piece accordingly as do we price this set as a piece of art, history AND a vintage porcelain tea set (without a teacup).

Seltmann Weiden Pottery, History
Christian Wilhelm Seltmann and his oldest brother Johann established a porcelain factory in a German town Vohenstrauß in 1901. The Porzellanfabrik Johann Seltmann swiftly developed into employing 600 workers respected porcelain producer. However brothers weren't able to find agreement on how to run a factory and finally in 1910 Christian Wilhelm Seltmann decided to start is own business in the town of Weiden. In just three years employment rose to 320 workers.

Christian died in an accident in 1921. Management of the factory passed to his widow Katharina Seltmann. In 1928 the business was taken over by her son Wilhelm. Company expanded taking over the Porzellanfabrik Krummennaab (1939) and the Porzellanfabrik Erbendorf (1940). After WWII it was difficult to bring factories back to business. Starting in 1953 Wilhelm Seltmann modernized his facilities. In 1957 he took over Königlich privilegierte Porzellanfabrik Tettau G.m.b.H. Wilhelm died in 1967. After German reunification in 1990 the Seltmann group took over four Thuringia porcelain factories. It is still a family business.

Condition*
Item appears to have never been used, so we are classifying this as "new" and OOAK (One of a kind) and even perhaps an original art piece--it may have been a display piece of some kind and appears to be brand new, out of the box. Also interesting is that the porcelain appears to be vintage while the print or "art" which displays the German regional newspaper, Südkurier, is the feature image. There was probably a teacup that was included in the set but has been lost. Overall this set is in pristine condition. See pictures for details, thank you. Comes from a smoke-free estate and has been properly cleaned and sanitized by Katerina Kollectibles staff.

Returns accepted in original, shipped condition. We welcome any reasonable offers. Our price is our best guess. If you are interested help us make it yours.
