Richter, Adrian Ludwig (1803-1884):
"Wolkenstein" - Wolkenstein Castle Erzgebirge / Saxony

Dresden and Leipzig; Arnold 1839.

Original etching from 1839. Sheet dimensions: approx. 22x27.5cm. Plate: approx. 16x20cm. -- well preserved. || Original etching from 1839. -- in very good condition. || Adrian Ludwig Richter (1803 - 1884) was a German painter and etcher who was heavily influenced by Erhard and Daniel Chodowiecki. He was a representative of both the Romantic and Biedermeier styles. Born in Dresden as the son of the engraver Carl August Richter, he received his training there. His interesting, if uneventful, life revolved largely around his art. As a painter, Richter strove for a thorough fusion of figures with landscapes and can be judged by the following examples: "Harvest Procession in the Campagna" (1833) as well as three others in the Leipzig Museum: "Fährboot am Schockenstein" (1836) and "Wedding Procession in Spring" (1847) in the Dresden Gallery; "View of the Giant Mountains" (1839) in the Nationalgalerie, Berlin. One of his most famous students was Hermann Lungkwitz. Richter visited Italy from 1823 to 1826, and his thunderstorm in the Sabine Mountains in the Städel Museum in Frankfurt is one of the rare Italian motifs from his pen. He worked for the Meissen Porcelain Manufactory and lived from 1828 to 1836 in a house on the Schlossbrücke, near the castle and the cathedral. In 1841 he became professor and head of the landscape studio at the Dresden Academy (now the Dresden University of Fine Arts). The Dresden gallery owns one of his best and most characteristic paintings: "Wedding Procession in a Spring Landscape". An eye disease forced him to give up his artistic work in 1874; He retired in 1877 and died in Loschwitz, near Dresden.
