USS Growler SS-215 memorial submarine cover honoring this brave World War II, 311 foot long Gato Class diesel sub commissioned in 1942. Lt. Commander Howard Gilmore, USN was awarded the Medal of Honor for his fearless attacks on enemy ships.

This submarine was built at Groton, CT and commissioned on 20 March 1942 and was ordered to the Pacific Theater. The vessel and crew arrived in Pearl Harbor in June 1942 and prepared for their first war patrol. ( see the web pages for the dramatic battle details)

She completed 11 war patrols in the Pacific and the skipper was awarded the Medal of Honor, but was never heard from again in November 1944. Postwar enemy records suggest she was sunk by an enemy ship or her own errant torpedo.

The first day postmark is from Freedom, Maine dated April 10, 2023. The blue printed photo cachet #3143 of the actual submarine at sea, was prepared by Alvin Eckert USCS #9964. Cover franked with a 63 cent flag stamp # 5788 (FDOI) and a 29 cent submarine stamp # 2838e from 1994. Cover prepared on a archive envelope without gum on the flap.
