This is a British School Prize copy of THE WORKS OF SAMUEL JOHNSON, L.L.D. CONTAINING THE "Lives of the English Poets; Rasselas; Lives of Eminent Persons; and a Journey to the Western Islands of Scotland, with an Introductory Essay by Arthur Murphy and 32 portraits on steel. It was published in 1877 by William P. Nimmo in London & Edinburgh in an octavo measuring 6.25" x 9.5" and containing an engraved portrait frontispiece of Johnson after a Joshua Reynolds painting followed by 608 pp. with 2 engraved illustrations (1 folding). It is bound in full polished crimson calf  by Bickers & Son in London, with marbled endpapers and page edges, gilt-paneled boards having gilt-rolled edges, the school crest embossed in gilt on the front cover (Queen Elizabeth's Free Grammar School, St. Olave & St. John, Southwark), and a heavy gilt-decorated spine compartmented by 5 raised bands and with a red morocco leather spine label titled in gilt. Overall, a very attractive copy.
