The C-123 was used, initially via landing and later by parachute drop to re-supply the USMC during the siege of Khe Sanh. The C-123 and it's pilot were respsonsible for the rescue of US Special Forces Operatives during the VC Assault on the Special Forces base at Kham Duc in May 1968. Candlestick operations were a primary role of the C-123 in it's 'Forward Air Control' ( FAC ) activities were they would drop flares into enemy strongholds and along enemy transport paths directing allied aircraft and artillery fire into these locations. The C-123 would identify enemy activity and movement along the Ho Chi Minh Trail in Laos, Cambodia and North Vietnam for allied helicopter Gunships, named 'Truck Killers' to detroy movement and disrupt supply lines.
