Kleemann. Haarlem and Amsterdam: C.H. Bohn and H. Gartman, 1765-1782. This is the much superior Dutch ed. on better paper and even better colouring. Corresponding text pages available on request.
Artists and Engravers: Made by 'A.I. Rosel van Rosenhof' after own design. Augustus Johannes Rosel von Rosenhof (1705-59) was a German miniature painter, and naturalist and entomologist. Roesel studied painting with his father and uncle, and later with the renowned Preisler in Nuremberg. While living in Copenhagen, he became inspired by the work of Maria Sibylla Merian. He returned to Nuremberg to devote himself largely to entomological studies and illustration, aided by his wife who hand colored his drawings and his son in law, who assisted in the publishing of his superbly illustrated scientific works. Roesel also did much of the engraving for his works.

Subject: 6 Antique prints, titled: ''Historiae Polyporum. Tab. LXXVIII-LXXXIII.'' - Set of six plates, all depicting ''De oranje-geele Polyp, met lange hoornvormige Armen, en daarnevens het Waterslangetje, met den langen tongachtigen Spriet'' (The orange-yellow Polyp, with long horn-shaped arms, and also the Watersnake, with the long tongue-like sprit). This is a species of Hydra, from the phylum Cnidaria from the class Hydrozoa.
Condition: Very good, given age. Some faint soiling and/or staining in the margin edges. Image faintly browned. Faint offsetting of the opposite text page. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
