PERSHING’S OWN”
THE UNITED STATES ARMY BAND
Colonel Eugene W. Allen
Leader and Commander
THE UNITED STATES ARNO" CHORUS
The sounds of The United States Anny Chorus expressed in this
album are die sounds of America at work, at play, and in prayer —
songs of her people and of die soldier. The Mditaiy District of
Washington proudly presents the only group of its hind -- The United
States Army Chorus - re-creating the familiar souiufs of America in
a unique and stirring style.
A natural outgrowth of General Pershing's vision of a topflight musi-
cal organization for die nation’s Army was the development of The
United States Army Chorus. Soldiers have always sung, and this tradi-
tion is vigorously maintained with the present group of select individu-
als.
Officially established as a separate unit through the efforts of then
Secretary of the Army Wilber M. Brucher in January', 1956, The
Chorus has earned an enviable reputation in the worlds of serious and
popular music. It has appeared in every major city of the United States
and has given perjbrmances in many of the nation's colleges and univer-
sities. The Chorus has appeared at Carnegie Had and had the distinc
lion of performing at the President's State dinner for the Apollo 11 as-
tronauts.
Concerts with The United Stales /Xnny Band are presented during
the summer season in Washington, D.C., at the Jefferson Memorial and
on the West Terrace of the Capitol building. Additionally, The Chorus
appears at official functions of the White House and State Department.
In addition to presenting Americana, the popular and patriotic as
demonstrated herein, The Chorus feels a particular responsibility to per-
form the great works writtenfor male voices by the master composers,
and has been highly acclaimed for its pei^ormances of Brahms, Scnubert,
Bartok and Martina. Equally well received have been The Chorus’ per-
formances on such television, shows as those of Ed Sullivan, Mike
Douglas and Bob Hope, as wed as the 1982 "Command Performance"
at Ford's Theatre which inspired this album.
The quality of musical excellence displayed by The United States
Army Chorus is a shining tribute to the America they represent.
