This is a single original GM cylinder head for a Big Block Chevy Engine. The original casting number is 3873858. The date code is E 27 6 which decodes as May 27th, 1966. This head is the high performance version with rectangular intake ports and closed combustion chambers. The 3873858 head was used by GM on late 1966 L78 396/375HP and L72 427/425HP(450HP) engines. These 3873858 head was also used as a replacement for casting numbers 3856208, 3904391, and 3919840, and 3964291. What a rare find!
This head is in good core condition as shown. It is complete with valves, springs, retainers, guide plates, and rocket studs as shown . This head recently came out of the estate of a long time Corvette collector. He collected many nice parts with the aniticpation of needing them for future restorations. This head was being used with a 3919840 head which can be found in my other listings. I separated them due to the different casting numbers but they work well together. This head has been in storage for decades and will need to be rebuilt before use. It has been cleaned and checked for cracks with none found. All threads are in good shape with no helicoils or thread inserts. The ports look to have deburring as shown. The deck surface is still very thick. One chamber has had a repair that looks great and has been sucessfully used since the repair. This head would be great as a replacement for your missing or damaged head. It would also be a great start to a pair.
