"Girl in a hammock" 2023
ink on paper drawing
16.5x12 in
I started drawing the “Sleeping Girl” series back in 2017.
My series of drawings and paintings with portraits are about attempting to find states in which it would be comfortable to coexist with similar beings on this planet and a constant desire to separate oneself from all things associated with the so-called civilized world and merge with nature, to escape into the forest and live there among the wild in harmony with all living things. I feel a repulsion in my soul towards aspects of the civilized world such as soil, air, and water pollution, the destruction of animals for entertainment and culinary excesses, perpetual senseless wars, the pursuit of money and various resources. Yet, I still have a craving for comfort: hot water, electricity, constant access to information in the form of the internet and books, comfortable clothing, a variety of products in supermarkets. Throughout my life, I have felt like an outsider observing what is happening around me, as if I am not participating and not influencing anything, unable to integrate into the flow of life and find my place in society. I constantly try different strategies and variations of myself as perceived by society, yet I always come to the same conclusion: I do not find meaning in all of this, I do not understand why I need this... and again, I find myself in the position of an observer, merging for a while with something real for me, with nature, with animals, trying to bring some harmony into my existence, helping homeless animals, feeding birds in winter, trying to find some meaning in existence. I want to dissolve into the beautiful nature of our planet and feel absolute harmony and unity with the world, immersing myself in art and creating my harmony on paper and canvases...
My works have been exhibited at various events, including in Donetsk in 2007, at the "House of Artists" in Kyiv in 2017, in Venice in 2017 concurrently with the 57th Venice Biennale, at the "House of the Architect" in Kyiv in 2018, at an art fair in Kyiv in 2019, and at other events.
