The USS Independence was a Forrestal-class aircraft carrier in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. It was commissioned in 1959 and deployed to Southeast Asia multiple times between 1965 and 1973.

During the war, the USS Independence operated in both the Gulf of Tonkin and the South China Sea, carrying out a variety of missions in support of US and allied forces on the ground in Vietnam. The ship's air wing included F-4 Phantom II and A-7 Corsair II fighter-bombers, as well as helicopters and other support aircraft.

The USS Independence's missions included providing air support for ground troops, conducting reconnaissance and surveillance operations, and carrying out strikes against enemy targets. The ship's pilots flew thousands of sorties over the course of the war, often facing intense anti-aircraft fire and other hazards.

In addition to its combat operations, the USS Independence also played a role in humanitarian efforts during the war. The ship was involved in the evacuation of refugees from Vietnam and provided medical aid to Vietnamese civilians in need.
