Вернувшись из Южной Америки, Тинтин берется за решение новой головоломки. На этот раз путь его лежит в Британию, где только что потерпел крушение самолет без опознавательных знаков. Накануне Тинтин уже видел этот самолет, и встреча с пилотами чуть не стоила ему жизни. В Англии Тинтин едва уносит ноги от зловещего доктора Мюллера, который оказывается главарем банды фальшивомонетчиков. Тинтину предстоит найти подпольную типографию, где преступники печатают поддельные банкноты. Все следы ведут в Шотландию, на Черный остров, о котором ходит дурная слава. Там, в развалинах замка Бен-Мор живет чудовище, якобы пожирающее всех, кто осмеливается нарушить его покой. Тинтин берет лодку и плывет туда…
«Черный остров» – это единственная книга «Приключений Тинтина», существующая в трех разных альбомных версиях (плюс еще одна журнальная, самая первая, выходившая в формате «с продолжением» в 1937-1938 гг.). Первая черно-белая версия 1938 года; вторая – цветная 1943 года и третья – полностью перерисованная цветная версия 1965 года. Причем перерисовывал ее не Эрже, а его помощники, прежде всего Боб де Моор и Роже Лелу. Эрже лишь руководил процессом, да и то вскользь, поскольку был занят текущим альбомом и не очень хотел возвращаться к сюжету 30-летней давности. Перерисовка была вызвана требованием английского издателя серии, который счел версию 1943 года устаревшей и полной мелких деталей, не соответствующих реальности (действие-то происходит в Британии!). Англичане предъявили Эрже список из более 130 поправок, после чего Эрже решил, что проще перерисовать все заново. Считается, что перерисовка, хоть и многократно повысила точность, уничтожила очарование первой цветной версии. И это при том, что Боб де Моор и Лелу – блестящие художники. Но Эрже был больше, чем просто «блестящий художник». Однако именно третья версия была выбрана издателем как базовая и именно она стала частью классической серии. Обе предыдущие, впрочем, тоже вполне доступны в виде факсимиле (люксовые издания на дорогой качественной бумаге).

“Black Island” is the only book of Tintin’s adventures, which exists in three different album versions (plus another magazine, the very first, published in the “continuation” format in 1937-1938). The first black and white version of 1938; The second is the color of 1943 and the third is a completely redrawn color version of 1965. Moreover, not Erzhe, but his assistants, primarily Bob de Moor and Roger Lelu. Erzhe only led the process, and even then, as he was busy with the current album and did not really want to return to the plot of 30 years ago. The redrawing was caused by the requirement of the English publisher of the series, who considered the version of 1943 outdated and complete small details that did not correspond to reality (the action takes place in Britain!). The British presented Erzhe's list of more than 130 amendments, after which Erzhe decided that it was easier to redraw everything again. It is believed that the redrawing, although it has repeatedly increased accuracy, destroyed the charm of the first color version. And this despite the fact that Bob de Moor and Lel is brilliant artists. But Erzhe was more than just a “brilliant artist”. However, it was the third version that was chosen by the publisher as the base and it was it that became part of the classical series. Both previous ones, however, are also quite accessible in the form of facsimil (luxury publications on expensive quality paper).
