HMS CAMPBELTOWN 1942
Former U.S. destroyer USS Buchanan, transferred to the Royal Navy in 1940 and renamed HMS Campbeltown. Took part in the St. Nazaire raid in March 1942. Her appearance was altered to resemble that of a German torpedo boat and an explosive charge of 4.5 tons of amatol was placed near her bows. During the raid she was rammed into the gates of the dry dock at St. Nazaire, the only one on the Atlantic coast capable of holding the battleship Tirpitz. The charge exploded the following day, killing around 250 German soldiers and French civilians, and wrecking the lock gates. The dry dock was not repaired until 1947.
