Artists and Engravers: Made by 'F. Lamb' after 'Samuel Thornton'. Samuel Thornton (d.1715) was the son the English mapmaker John Thornton, an eminent English mapmaker of the late seventeenth and early eighteenth century. After his father's death in 1708, Samuel Thornton continued to re-issue his father’s map (often with his imprint substituted).

Subject: Antique print, titled: 'A Chart of ye Coast of Biafra form Foche Island to Corisco Island together with the Islands of Fernando Poo & Princes.' - A map/chart of the coast of West Africa, from Kings Towne (Port Harcourt?) and Calabar in Nigeria past Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea to Gabon (around Libreville). This includes the islands of Principe and Bioko. Depth soundings along the coast as well as shoals are indicated.
Condition: Good, given age. Original middle fold, as issued. Some creasing in the top edge, as well as in the top right corner (crossing the image corner) and lower left margin corner. The paper edges slightly damaged in the lower left and right corners. A small tear in the lower edge of the middle fold (not affecting image). General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
Size (in cm): The overall size is ca. 58.9 x 46.1 cm. The image size is ca. 52.9 x 43.1 cm. Size (in inch): The overall size is ca. 23.2 x 18.1 inch. The image size is ca. 20.8 x 17 inch.
