The Lyon Pipe is a System Pipe, in that it has a Screw In Briar Bowl, (Threads are Fully intact), that Threads into the Briar Body of the Pipe itself.

The Underslung design refers to the Stem/Shank connection being high on the Bowl, making for a Unique Shape. And in this case a practical design as well.

This Underslung pipe smoked similar to a gourd Calabash. Except this one has a removable Threaded "Briar" Bowl, (Some were Made with Bakelite).

The original designer, of this style of pipe, was Charles Lyon. He saw Vice Presidential candidate General Charles Dawes smoking a pipe, so Lyon sent Dawes one of his pipes. The LYON pipe became Dawes trademark and he became Vice President under Calvin Coolidge.

THE LYON PIPE soon became known as the DAWES pipe. Because Lyon couldn't keep up with orders, KB&B began to produce it in the 20s. Many other pipemakers, including WDC, MLC and even DUNHILL copied this design.

This is a used pipe and has signs of wear. Exterior has been cleaned and polished. Bowl has been reamed, and is ready for the bowl treatment of your choosing since people have their own preference on that.
