'Benjamin Anns of Highworth' c. 1750

This is a single hand brass-faced 30-hour Grandfather Clock in a rich oak and mahogany case. Also known as a 'Cottage' Clock at this time.

The 9.5 ” face has Roman numerals. The spandrels and hands date it to about 1750. There is an etching of a coast with sailing ships.

The movement is clean and strikes to a bell on the hour.

The hood has a swan neck pediment which is supported on wooden pillars with brass cappings. There is a brass knob on the door.

The trunk has a full-length door with brass hinges and escutcheon. There is a working lock with key.

The slim case has an attractive patina.

H = 84.5”  W = 17”  D = 9.5”

'Benjamin Anns is recorded as working in Highworth, Wiltshire from at least 1748 when his first son Thomas was born. An oak cased brass dialled longcase clock signed for Anns is in the Salisbury and South Wiltshire Museum. Benjamin died in March 1807. His son James, born in April 1750, was an eminent master watch and clockmaker.'
