1964 Pontiac Bonneville trunk lid molding. (298)

1964 Pontiac Bonneville trunk lid molding. (298)

This part attaches to the rear edge of the trunk lid of above stated model car.  To my knowledge it fits nothing else.  It goes up when the trunk lid is raised.  The larger BONNEVILLE part below it doesn’t move.

It is about 52 inches wide and the part number on back reads 4410912.  All 4 of the oh-so-important mounting studs on back are unbroken, and intact, and look really strong.  All 4 have their respective speed nuts.  Additionally, the 2 smaller ones at the very outer ends also look really good and have their weirdly shaped fasteners, too.

Overall, this is an excellent piece.  Really it is.  It’s waaaaaaay above 99% pit free, but just not perfect like brand new.  The wider chrome area at the bottom looks fantastic, and the duller “brushed” area in the middle looks great, too.  Apparently, this car had single exhaust and it exited on the passenger side.  That is where all of the pitting is located.

In the narrow crease on the right-hand side there is an area of about 12 inches where you can see pitting if you tip it at just the “wrong” angle, and stare at it.  It’s not horrible or gnarly.  You might be able to improve it a little with some polish.  Finally, the part has a mild case of “brown dot syndrome”.  Often, otherwise pit free, smooth pot metal develops light brown streaks or dots that can be visible when, again, you tip it at just the wrong angle in certain light conditions and stare closely at it.

Installed on the car, this piece will look utterly fantastic.  Everybody will love it, including you.  If you want NOS, do not buy this part.  It is NOT perfect.  On my “niceness” scale from 0 to 100 and 50 being average condition, this thing would score about a 92 or 93 as fragile, old pot metal goes.  Yours is about a 23.  Yeccch!

When I just unwrapped it today, the newspaper wrapping had stories of President Reagan and car dealerships selling brand new 1986 Fords, so I probably removed this about 1986 or 1987 here in the desert Southwest.  It is like a 20-year-old desert part.  YAY!

This part, and the BONNEVILLE part below it, and especially the rocker moldings are the real Achilles heel of the 1964 Bonneville.  I hope the rest of your pot metal is as good as this piece.  Good luck with your car.  I really love the ’64 Bonneville 2 door car.  It looks fantastic.

Please keep in mind that all items came off 40 year old cars, mostly in junkyards. These have been cleaned and debugged, deleafed, deschmutzed and spiffied up, and in some cases look almost N.O.S., but they ARE NOT.

All of our stuff is nice, some VERY, VERY NICE, but it is still JUNK and will have some defects somewhere. If you are looking for N.O.S., Martys-GM-Junk is not the place for you.
