Blue actual photo of this submarine printed on cachet #2846 by Alvin Eckert, USCS #9964. Cover franked with a 33 cent Tang fish stamp # 3319(FDOI) and a 63 cent flag stamp # 5788 (FDOI).

USS Tang: this fine 311 foot fighting vessel was built at Mare Island and commissioned 15 Oct 1943 and ordered to the Pacific Theater. The submarine made five outstanding war patrols and sank 33 enemy ships. Her skipper,  Commander Richard O'Kane, USN was a very aggressive leader who sank thirty-three enemy ships. The proud vessel was sunk by a circular-run torpedo and 78 the crewmen were lost, on 24 Oct 1944, They joined many other "Greatest Generation" submariners on Eternal Patrol. Skipper O'Kane was awarded the Medal of Honor for the last two engagements. The vessel's crew earned two Presidential Unit Citations.
