The restoration of the Hagia Sophia was ordered by Sultan Abdul Mejid and completed by 800 workers between 1847 and 1849, under the supervision of the Swiss-Italian architect brothers, Gaspare and Giuseppe Fossati. When the restoration was finished, the mosque was re-opened with ceremonial pomp on 13 July 1849.
