Saint Vincent is the patron saint of the Burgundy winegrowers. Statues like this were placed above the entrance of Burgundy cellars of the 12th century. This deacon and martyr lived in Zaragoza, Spain in the 4th century. A feast in his honor gives rise each year, on January 22, to parades and celebrations in Burgundy. This date also marks the end of winter rest for the vines, hence the saying, “Good Saint Vincent, mighty man, raise the sap to the vine shoot”.
