This is an original 1862-1893 bronze casting of Pandora holding her open box.

This elegant piece by Artist Emile Herbert was originally the top to a clock that was signed by Auguste Lemaire a renowned clockmaker of the period. This item has superb detail and was cast in several parts. It also has the old French numbers on the underside. This piece has a rich brown patina and is in excellent condition for its age.

Pierre-Eugène-Émile Hébert (October 12 or 20, 1823 – 1893) was a French sculptor. As the son of sculptor Pierre Herbert' he studied both with his father and with Jean-Jacques-Feuchere (1807–1852). Émile Hébert participated in the Salon de Paris and the Exposition Universelle 1855, created the allegorical statues La Comédie and Le Drame for the vaudeville theatre in Paris, and was awarded a Second Class Medal in 1872. Émile Hébert was one of the few sculptors to work with the renowned bronze fondeur Georges Servant, and their artistic collaboration resulted in pieces of the Neo-Grecian and Egyptian Revival style.

Auguste Lemaire founded a workshop for the manufacture of "bronzes d'art" in 1851 at 10, rue Saintonge, in the Marais district. At the Universal Exhibition of 1855 he was awarded a medal. It was not before 1862, that he extends his business to rue Vieille du Temple. He gained a reputation in creating Renaissance or Henri II style bronze objects such as clock garnitures, chenets, candelabra, etc.
