Dimensions: approx. 18x23cm. Pen drawing over pencil on paper. -- well preserved. || Ink drawing over pencil on paper. -- in very good condition Isidore Pils was a French painter and watercolorist. In 1834 he became a student of the history painter François-Edouard Picot in Paris. Pils took part in exhibitions at the Académie des Beaux-Arts. In 1838 his picture 'Peter Healing the Lame' won an award. He was awarded the Prix de Rome, combined with a generous study visit to the Villa Medici in Rome. Pils returned to Paris in 1843. He undertook further study trips to, among other places, Asia Minor and the Crimea. There he was an observer of the Crimean War. In 1860 he shared a studio in Paris with the painter Alfred de Dreux. During the siege of Paris by the Prussians in 1871, he painted numerous military scenes. In 1875, Pils completed his last work: the paintings on the vaulted ceiling in the staircase of the New Opera.
