This is a bronze frog statue.
A bronze frog ornament clad in a sumo wrestler's ceremonial apron (kesho-mawashi). The figure, squatting on a Buddhist statue's pedestal, is endearing.
I believe the ornament incorporates Buddhist elements.
In the famous Heian period painting, Choju-jinbutsu-giga, a frog and a rabbit are seen sumo wrestling, where the frog is said to represent Buddha.
This item dates from around 1940, and the box is a modern matching box"Kiri bako".
