A surveyors cross staff. The octagonal body has pierced slots on all eight sides holding cord reticules attached with screws. Contained in the original, high quality tongue and groove hard wood box with hook fastenings and hanging ring to one end. These are used for setting out right angles. The compass swings freely and finds north easily.

The compass was used to take a bearings when in use. 2¼” black dial and silvered scale, displaying French cardinals “N, E, S” and “O.” Fine needle seated on a jewelled bearing, blued to indicate north, sliding transit lock to exterior. Case black.

The brass retains a lot of its original black lacquer but shows signs of age.

A cross-staff is a surveyor’s instrument used to determine right and other angles, sometimes topped by a compass which would be used to take the bearing of the line. The base has a fitting to take a staff. Perhaps made in France. The lens cap consists of two parts the ring and cap. These have been refitted but can be vulnerable.
