"Across 110th Street": Isaac Hayes's "Theme from Shaft" won the 1971 Academy Award for best original song, and
that seemed to assuage the Hollywood establishment's guilt over ignoring black singer-songwriters; so much so that
the following year they completely bypassed the greatest film soundtrack/song combination ever (IMO) in Curtis
Mayfield's "Superfly" original score and song "Freddie's Dead." To this I would add the third greatest "blaxploitation"
film theme (in three consecutive years), Bobby Womack's "Across 110th Street," which he wrote with his soundtrack
collaborator J.J. Johnson. Again, no nominations, but it's a keenly observed, dynamic recording that was worthy of
greater recognition. The LP is almost equally divided between Womack vocals and J.J. Johnson & His Orchestra
instrumentals; and it's all cool stuff, although not nearly at the level of the title song (which also appears in
instrumental form with powerful, emphatic horns and a hot organ solo at the end). Two other fine Womack songs here
are the relaxed and resigned, mid-tempo "If You Don't Want My Love" and the relentless soul-blues-funk of "Do It
Right," punctuated by Bobby's James Brown-esque (or Wilson Pickett-esque) soul screams.
