University of Mantua, the Gonzaga, and the Jesuits, 1, Hardcover by Grendler, Paul F., ISBN 080189171X, ISBN-13 9780801891717, Brand New, Free shipping in the US

Very thoroughly documented and a pleasure to read, this history of the short-lived University of Mantua (it was sacked by the Germans, along with the rest of the city, in 1630, six years after it opened) chronicles the philosophy and politics behind the university's creation, curriculum, professors, and doctrine. Rare for being jointly run by Jesuits and lay faculty, with Duke Ferdinando Gonzaga playing a key role in the university's formation, the University was well funded and attracted top thinkers of the day in subjects that included medicine and law as well as theology. Grendler (emeritus, history, U. of Toronto) is a gifted writer; his book will be of value to historians as well as a treat for the general reader. Annotation ©2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR ()
